Stonington

A quintessential New England seaside town, Stonington is Mystic's calmer and quieter sister. Brightly painted homes dating back to the 1800s line the streets and a stone lighthouse watches over the harbor. On the water, fishermen check their lobster traps amidst gently rocking boats. Founded in 1654 as a trading post, the town grew and eventually based its wealth around the seal trade. During the War of 1812, British ships bombarded the seaside town for three days with stinkpot incendiaries that spread noxious smoke into the air. The Brits were successfully repulsed and Stonington emerged triumphant. Today, this picturesque town remains crowd free and gives visitors an authentic New England experience.

The catch here is as fresh as it can get. Restaurant goers can easily glimpse their seafood's journey from trap to plate.
