Brookgreen Gardens Lowcountry Zoo

Bounded by the Atlantic on one side and the Savannah River on the other, the Lowcountry is a marshy, watery place with unique ecological habitats. Arching live oaks are draped with dreamy Spanish moss, appearing almost as if they had come from a fairy tale. Alligators lie in murky cypress swamps and eye-catching birds wade in the creeks and estuaries. The Lowcountry Zoo in Brookgreen Gardens aims to showcase the natural splendor of this region, and the trail through the zoo winds through a variety of different habitats. I do not generally like zoos and always grow a little claustrophobic in them, but I do appreciate the Lowcountry Zoo's plans to try to reintroduce species such as the Red Wolf back into the wild. Despite the despondency of the metal cages of a zoo, there is hope in those goals for the future.
