Hammond Castle

Hammond Castle in Gloucester, Massachusetts, seems simultaneously out of place and right at home. Designed in the late 1920s by wealthy inventor John Hays Hammond, Jr, the castle’s architectural style is a mixture of a medieval castle, a Gothic cathedral, a Renaissance-era French village, and Roman ruins. Picturesque arches overlook the dark Atlantic, and ivy creeps up the stone walls beside the drawbridge. If there was ever any doubt as to why Hammond chose this particular location for his castle, it will surely be dispersed with just one look at the soul-stretching view found here.

Gloucester

Recognized as one of the nation's top fishing ports, Gloucester's history is forever entwined with the ocean. But this connection comes at a cost. Thousands of fishermen have been lost at sea in the first three centuries of Gloucester's history. Now, a memorial stands in Stage Fort Park to honor them and their families.
