Williams College Museum of Art
Art does not hide here at Williams College but is instead honored by all the fields of study. The first of the museum’s pieces that visitors see when they arrive are the eye sculptures, curvy bronze pupils doubling as benches. Though the museum itself is small in size, it is immense in the amount of interesting pieces it holds. The collection ranges from art from ancient cultures to modern photography. One of the most special features about the Williams College Museum of Art is its non-traditional set-up. While most museums group art by the artist, time period, or culture, many of the exhibits in the Williams Art Museum are grouped by some deeper connection that requires more thinking to unravel. An Etruscan drinking vessel might be placed by a wood chair from the Massachusetts Bay Colony. A 17th-century Indian painting from a ragmala set and a 16th-century engraving of a Virgin and Child might become neighbors. After touring the museum, visitors see that art is not an isolated field but instead touches all of the world.
