Old City Philadelphia

Philadelphia goes by many nicknames: "Philly", "the City of Brotherly Love", and even the less flattering "Filthadelphia." The city's most significant nickname, however, is "the Birthplace of America." The Old City district of Philadelphia is home to America's most historic square mile, showcasing the history of the birth of the nation and the freedom for which it is famous. On every street there are sites of historic significance, such as Independence Hall, the Liberty Bell, the Betsy Ross House, Benjamin Franklin's Printing Shop, Elfreth's Alley, and the First and Second Banks of the United States. Red brick by brick, column by column, Philadelphia tells the story of how freedom first began to grow in young America. Museums like the Fireman's Hall Museum and the National Constitution Center honor those who fought to preserve and expand this freedom, and cultural events such as the Philadelphia Chinese Lantern Festival stand as evidence to how America's freedom has been a beacon to people from all around the world. Philadelphia may have its struggles and its filth, but ultimately it spells a story of the sunrise of freedom and a hope for its continued success.
